Construction Begins to Create ‘New Dixie Highway’; Safer, More Efficient Travel through Major Corridor

A major project to improve safety along one of the city’s most traveled highways began a new phase today, as Mayor Greg Fischer and U.S. Dept. of Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao announced the construction kickoff of the New Dixie Highway Project.

District 8, Public Works, and Office of Advanced Planning announce Bardstown Road/Baxter Avenue safety study
District 8 Metro Councilman Brandon Coan, Public Works, Develop Louisville’s Office of Advanced Planning have announced the Bardstown Road/Baxter Avenue Safety Study with the purpose of analyzing existing safety and mobility issues on Bardstown Road and Baxter Avenue between Broadway and Interstate 264.
The goal of the study is to identify solutions for improving safety and mobility for all users with emphasis on pedestrians and bicyclists.

Jack O' Lantern Spectacular returns to Iroquois Park for fifth consecutive year
In what has become the must-see event of the Halloween season, the Jack O’ Lantern Spectacular is returning for the fifth consecutive year to south Louisville’s Iroquois Park, where 5,000 artistically carved pumpkins will greet visitors from Oct. 12 through Nov. 5.
The pumpkins will illuminate a 1/3-mile trail adjacent to the Iroquois Amphitheater, and Metro Parks officials estimate up to 85,000 people will visit.

Develop Louisville will hold nine open house forums for the public to view the work completed to date on the Comprehensive Plan update and provide feedback. City celebrates street paving progress
Mayor Greg Fischer and members of Metro Council today celebrated great progress on repairing or replacing worn out pavement on roads across Louisville. The celebration was held at the corner of Broadway and South 45th Street along Shawnee Park, where crews recently completed the city’s 100th mile of paving for 2016.

Bike to Work Day is May 20
People who work in Louisville are encouraged to use peddle power for their commute on Bike to Work Day next Friday May 20. Cyclists can bike independently or go to one of four meet-and-ride locations to join group rides.

Street sweeping alert system launched
Mayor Greg Fischer announced today that Louisville residents can now sign up to receive an automatic notice, via email and text, when their street is scheduled to be swept by Metro Public Works. The notices are meant to alert residents in advance that they must find alternate parking on street sweeping day.

Fairdale Roundabout Construction Contract Awarded
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (December 4, 2015) – The office of Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear today announced that a contract has been awarded for construction of the long-awaited Fairdale Roundabout project. The $2.9 million contract was awarded to Flynn Brothers Contracting, which submitted the low bid.

Public Meetings Set on Planned Bike Lanes

Two public meetings will be held to discuss plans for the installation of new bike lanes along Twelfth and Thirteenth streets between Rowan and West Kentucky streets, and along West Kentucky Street between Eighth and Twelfth streets.

South English Station Road Bridge to Shut for Repair
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will begin repairs on the South English Station Road Bridge over Interstate 64 this Friday, October 2. The week-long project will correct poor pavement conditions on the bridge deck that have long created rough rides for motorists. To accommodate the repairs, the bridge will close at 8 p.m. on Friday, October 2. It is scheduled to reopen on Saturday, October 10 at 9.m.
