Zipcar Arrives in Louisville
Mayor Greg Fischer announced today that Zipcar, the world’s leading car sharing network, is coming to Louisville. Zipcar members in the Louisville area are now able to reserve vehicles in the city from two spots leased by the Parking Authority of River City (PARC) at the Brown Hotel.
A self-serve, rentable vehicle, the two new Zipcars can be reserved by members via the Zipcar smartphone app.
“Car sharing is an innovative, environmentally-friendly form of transportation,” Fischer said. “Zipcars also provide residents, businesses and tourists a great way to further explore our city.”
The app is available on both Android and iPhone platforms, online at www.zipcar.com, or over the phone. Rates in Louisville start as low as $9 per hour and $69 per day (24 hours) and include gas, insurance and 180 free miles per day. Car sharing is a cost effective and sustainable mode of transportation that reduces CO2 emissions and congestion in cities. Studies have shown that in North America, each car share vehicle can replace approximately 15 individually owned cars.
“Zipcar is looking forward to working with the City of Louisville and Mayor Fischer’s office on their initiative to bring our service to the area,” said Zipcar University General Manager Katelyn Lopresti. “Zipcar strives to make it possible for people to live in a city without owning a car while delivering on our brand promise of ‘wheels when you want them’ in a fun and innovative way.”
Interested Louisville residents can become a Zipcar member by signing up online at www.zipcar.com, with memberships starting as low as $6/month. Zipcar will initially offer Louisville residents two vehicles, a Mazda 6, named Jesica, and a Mazda 3, named Medlock. Cars can be reserved by members ages 21 and over, 24 hours a day seven days a week.
“The Parking Authority is excited to participate in this innovative form of transportation,” said PARC Director Tiffany Smith. “While being an excellent green initiative and another great opportunity for sustainability, we feel this additional mode of transportation is a customer service benefit that our parkers and citizens will appreciate and utilize.”
Zipcar members in the Louisville area are given access to the new cars in the City as well as Zipcar’s entire global network in hundreds of cities and towns around the world. For more information or to sign up, visit www.zipcar.com.
