Unity in the Community: Come celebrate the art and history of Shively on Saturday, May 21!

May 16, 2022

The community event is part of the new ‘Arts in Neighborhoods’ initiative

Louisville – Councilwoman Keisha Dorsey (D-3) is inviting everyone to come celebrate the art and history of Shively at the ‘Unity in the Community’ art festival on Saturday, May 21.

The free community event, which is a team effort with the Fund for the Arts and Shively Mayor Beverly Chester-Burton, will be hosted at Shively City Hall from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The day will kick off with a rededication of a piece of public art at 11:00 a.m. outside City Hall. The Southwest Jefferson Peace Memorial was created in 1986 by artists Ed Hamilton and Bob Markert to honor Shively’s contribution to foreign wars.

After the rededication, the arts festival will include performances from DJ Xavi, Faithworks Studios Jubilee Singers, Hector Santiago, Kizomba Dance, Yariel Santiago, and LaVon and the Vonettes. Food trucks will be onsite and kids under the age of 18 can eat for free.

Residents of Shively will also be able to enter to win free tickets to summer events at the Kentucky Performing Arts Center, like the hit musical Hamilton, Paw Patrol, and more. Tickets are sponsored by Councilwoman Dorsey.

“Events like Unity in the Community allow the residents of Shively to come together to celebrate one another and the vibrant arts and culture that make our city a unique part of the Greater Louisville area,” said Councilwoman Dorsey. “The ticket giveaways allow residents the chance to see other arts and bring the influence of nationally recognized music, art, and theatre, back into their own creation as well.”

Unity in the Community is the third event this spring in the Fund for the Arts’ performance series ‘Arts in Neighborhoods’, which reflects the unique character of each neighborhood.
