ReSurfaced Launch Party Friday

September 18, 2014

A vacant section of West Main Street downtown that has been transformed into a temporary plaza with art, music, movies and local craft beers will officially open this weekend.

Mayor Greg Fischer will join the ReSurfaced Launch Party at 4 p.m. Friday to celebrate and thank the local arts groups, architects, volunteers and Metro Government workers who transformed 615 W. Main St. into a pop-up plaza and beer garden.

"It has been great to see this vacant space come alive," Fischer said. "Grassy mounds have been built and bamboo and other creative elements -- including shipping containers -- have turned concrete into a community space. This is a successful example of people working together to build a unique environment, a place where people can come together and share ideas, enjoy their city."

ReSurfaced will operate for the next six weeks (until Oct. 25), Thursday-Sunday of each week, with arts performances, DJ?s, movies, food trucks and a community maker space. Each Sunday, a local non-profit will be featured, with a portion of proceeds of beer sales donated to the organization.

ReSurfaced is part of a broader effort to encourage people to see the potential in the city's many vacant spaces, surface parking lots and neglected and abandoned buildings.

The project is a partnership between Fischer's office and City Collaborative, overseen by Patrick Piuma, head of the Urban Design Studio.
