New operator to own grocery in Park DuValle

August 19, 2016

A 75-year-old Southern Indiana family grocery company is taking over the First Choice Market in Park Duvalle, previously operated by the owners of ValuMarket.

The store opened at 3044 Wilson Ave. in June 2012, as a collaborative effort among ValuMarket, Louisville Metro Government, Congressman Yarmuth, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Canaan Community Development Corp. and developer SAL Louisville.

The goal was to establish a full-service grocery with fresh produce, bakery, butcher shop and deli to a previously underserved area in west Louisville. And its new owner, Buehler Inc. of Jasper, Ind., promises the same.

“A grocery store is a neighborhood’s fundamental retail service, and it is fantastic news that Park DuValle and surrounding neighborhoods will have continuous grocery service at the same location and with the same great quality,” Mayor Greg Fischer said. “Big thanks to ValuMarket for filling the need and serving the neighborhood well over the last four years, and I am equally encouraged by the Buehler family and their commitment to west Louisville.”

James Neumann of ValuMarket and Robert Holmes of SAL Louisville, praised Buehler for its commitment to keeping a quality grocery store in the Park DuValle neighborhood.

“It is really a very smooth and cordial transition from one family grocer to another,” Neumann said. “We both have great mutual respect for each other’s companies and families.”

The market will close temporarily starting Sunday, September 11, and the Buehler family will begin a comprehensive remerchandising of the store and change of pricing structure before reopening as the new Cash Saver Market on Friday, September 16.

Buehler’s Matt Dills, a fourth generation grocer who negotiated the deal with his grandfather, Dave Buehler, said all current employees of First Choice Market are being given an opportunity to interview for their same positions with the new store. Dills added that the First Choice Market location will be a natural fit for the Cash Saver brand.

“We are really impressed with the friendliness of the staff and look forward to working with them as a Cash Saver,” Dills said. “Cash Saver will offer the same wide selection of high-quality groceries at everyday low prices.  Our stores are structured to keep expenses lower and pass savings on to the customer. We gladly accept all forms payment, including cash, credit card, debit card, SNAP and EBT.”

Buehler Inc. is a 75-year family run grocery company that operates twelve (12) Save-A-Lot Grocery Stores and three (3) Cash Saver Markets in Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky, including five (5) stores in the Louisville metro area.

Holmes, the property’s developer, praised ValuMarket’s Neumann family “for opening this store when no one else had faith in this site,” and added that he is “excited for the transition to work with another great family-owned company.”

Both companies expressed gratitude to Mayor Fischer, Councilwomen Mary Wooldridge and Jessica Green, and Second Division LMPD Major Raymond J. Harper for their support and assistance with the transition.

ValuMarket, First Choice Market and Cash Saver are all supplied by Associated Wholesale Grocers, Nashville division.

ValuMarket will continue to operate four locations in Mid City Mall, Iroquois Manor, Outer Loop Plaza and Mount Washington under the ValuMarket banner.
