Metro Council Budget Committee Announces Hearing Schedule for FY 19 Capital and Operating Budgets
Louisville – Louisville Metro Council’s Budget Committee has added another public hearing and released its schedule for reviewing Mayor Greg Fischer’s proposed 2018 -2019 Capital and Operating Budgets.
For the second year, the Committee will review the proposal over the months of May and June. The Metro Council extended the budget review process by an extra month last year, in order to hear from the public and thoroughly review and discuss the needs of each department and agency of Metro Government.
“The upcoming budget promises to be difficult, with increased pension and health care costs taking up most of the anticipated additional revenue. The Committee is looking forward to hearing from the public and various departments and agencies of Metro Government as we review services and priorities, and make the best use of available resources to serve the people of Metro Louisville,” says Councilman Bill Hollander (D-9), Chair of the Committee.
“The budget process offers members of the Metro Council as well as the people we serve the opportunity to question priorities and offer new ideas on the manner in which your tax dollars are spent. In the past few years Councilmembers have used information learned as part of the budget process to increase paving by 500%, fund drug treatment programs such as Centerstone Livingroom and Volunteers of America’s Freedom House and help revitalize parks. We look forward to this year’s testimony and the ideas that will be incorporated into the Mayor’s budget proposal.” says Councilman Kevin Kramer (R-11), who is Vice Chair of the Committee.
The Committee begins budget hearings on Tuesday, May 8th at 3:30 pm with a presentation on projected Revenues and Operations, followed by a presentation of Capital and Debt.
This year, the committee is adding a third opportunity for the public to speak about the budget. Public hearings are scheduled for May 9 at 6:30 pm; May 15 at 6:00 pm and May 21 at 6:00 p.m.
The May 9 meeting follows a discussion about the panels which recommend External Agency funding and is reserved for applicants for those funds. A sign-up sheet will be available on the third floor of City Hall beginning at 5:30 pm on May 9 and all applicants for External Agency funding who wish to speak (it is not required) are strongly encouraged to speak on May 9.
The May 15 public hearing will be open to all speakers on the budget. On May 21, no External Agency applicants will be permitted to speak and the committee hopes to hear from the public about more general aspects of the budget.
Sign-up sheets for the May 15 and May 21 meetings will be available one hour prior to the public hearings.
