BISSELL Pet Foundation is hosting its summer 2021 national “Empty the Shelters” adoption event, a quarterly effort that has helped more than 53,742 pets find their forever homes. During each nationwide event, BISSELL Pet Foundation helps sponsor reduced adoption fees for $25 or less per dog, cat, puppy and kitten. This summer’s event will be hosted in more than 180 shelters in 40 states, including Louisville Metro Animal Services (LMAS).

LMAS will participate July 9-11 by offering free adoptions for all dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens at Animal House Adoption Center, located at 3516 Newburg Road. Animal House will be open on Friday from 12-7pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 12-6pm. Every adoption includes spay/neuter, microchip, and vaccinations. Jefferson County adopters will receive a free, one-year pet license, thanks to a generous donation from the non-profit, Friends of Metro Animal Services (FOMAS).

Meet & greets are mandatory for families with children; dog and cat testing are available by request. Adopters are asked to bring or purchase a collar and leash for dogs, and a crate for cats.

The “Empty the Shelters” event began in 2016 as an effort to encourage more families to adopt a pet into their home. Since its inception, BISSELL Pet Foundation has expanded its “Empty the Shelters” reach to organizations in 45 states and Canada, partnering with a total of 414 shelters. The goal for the summer 2021 event is to find forever homes for 4,000 pets.

“BISSELL Pet Foundation’s 'Empty the Shelters' events have become a valuable tool for our shelter partners to find loving families for their pets, allowing them to support their community and other shelters who struggle,” said Cathy Bissell, Founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation. “We are excited to have 40 states - the most ever - represented in our July event. Thousands of pets across the country will find forever homes, and that’s what it’s all about.”

LMAS has not participated in an adoption event since before the start of the COVID-19 Pandemic. In December 2019, more than 70 dogs and cats were adopted from LMAS during the Bissell Pet Foundation’s Empty the Shelters - Holiday Hope event.

“We’re excited to reopen the doors to potential adopters who could not walk through our facility to meet adoptable pets for a year because of COVID-19,” said Teeya Barnes, LMAS Public information Specialist. “The Empty the Shelter’s event is great way to welcome back the public and encourage people to adopt instead of shopping for a pet.”
