Four Jefferson County Attorney’s Office employees test positive for COVID, additional staff members to quarantine as precaution

LOUISVILLE – Four staff members of the Jefferson County Attorney’s office (JCAO) have tested positive for COVID-19 in recent days and an additional 16 staff members are now in self-quarantine as a precaution.

Three Assistant County Attorneys and one victim advocate have tested positive, with two cases learned of today. An additional 12 Assistant County Attorneys and four additional staff members were within 6 feet of these employees for 15 minutes or more and will therefore self-quarantine, following CDC guidelines. The local health department has also been contacted so that additional contact tracing can be considered.

A total of 103 staff work in the JCAO’s Criminal Division, including 67 attorneys. Court operations were not affected today but the number of staff on medical leave or quarantine is likely to impact the District Court in the coming weeks, with the local chief District Judge and state’s Administrative Office of the Court making that determination.

“Anyone who isn’t taking measures to protect themselves from COVID or thinks it cannot reach their family or business is making a serious mistake,” said Jefferson County Attorney Mike O’Connell. “It has come to our office even with consistent mask use, sanitizing, and working to stay physically distanced. I urge everyone to take all possible precautions this Labor Day and Derby weekend to limit the spread of this disease.”
