Councilwoman Purvis sponsors free swimming lessons for children in District 5
Louisville – Councilwoman Donna Purvis is partnering with the YMCA for an important summer program to provide free swimming lessons for 100 children in District 5.
It is an effort to promote water safety, and along the way the Councilwoman hopes children will also have some fun and exercise during the summer months.
"Urban youth drownings statics are alarming, and the number one reason is a lack of access to public pools and swimming lessons. I am hopeful we can reduce those numbers with this free program in District 5," says Councilwoman Purvis.
The free-swimming lessons will be offered in eight lessons sessions over the following dates in June: June 7th - June 10th, and June 14th - June 17th. Then in July, the eight lessons will be given over the following dates of July 5th - July 8th and July 12th – July 13th.
To take advantage of the free-swimming lessons, children must live in District 5 and be in 1st grade through 5th grade. Transportation will be provided, and pickups will be available from the Molly Leonard Center and the Shawnee Community Center.
"This is a pilot program and if attendance and outcomes are successful, we will look at offering more lessons this year," says Councilwoman Purvis. "My goal is for the youth in District 5 to have an opportunity to learn how to swim and understand water safety."
All classes will be conducted through the YMCA.
Registration for the free classes will close on June 2nd.
