Councilwoman Purvis and The Russ Smith Foundation to unveil Breonna Taylor Basketball Court
Louisville – As a way to bring the community together, Councilwoman Donna Purvis (D-5) and The Russ Smith Foundation will unveil a new mural on the renovated basketball court in Lannan Park on Friday, June 4th dedicated to the memory of Breonna Taylor. The community is invited to participate in the event which will also begin a weekend of celebrating Breonna’s birthday.
"I am hopeful that this collaboration will start the healing process in our community. We are proud to house this court in District 5 and want to use this as one of many steps to learn how to bridge the gap and coexist in our community, " said Councilwoman Purvis.
The unveiling is set for 4:00 p.m. on Friday at Lannan Park located at 27th and Northwestern Parkway.
"The Russ Smith Foundation is honoring Breonna Taylor's life as a national landmark for social injustice. In the process, our goal is to inspire community outreach within our law enforcement. Our foundation feels there is only progress if awareness is heightened. We want to thank all involved and hope we can bring positivity to all communities," says Russ Smith.
The Mural was created by national and local artists with the team of Comacell Brown, Jr. The idea for it came after discussions between the partnership and Metro Parks.
Work began last August and included expanding the court to regulation size and incorporating the mural of Miss Taylor when completed. Realizing parks are a connection point for children and families, the partnership believes that Lannan Memorial Park will bring a spirit of understanding and community following the tragic loss of Miss Taylor.
The event will also feature:
- National and local speakers
- Former members of the 1980 and 1986 UofL Men's Championship Basketball Teams
- Free food provided by KFC
- Free autographed Nike Basketballs, t-shirts and UofL caps by UofL Players
Joining Councilwoman Purvis and The Russ Smith Foundation as sponsors are the Louisville Metro Council, Metro Parks, Nike, KFC, UofL, Sherwin Williams Paint, Shively Sporting Goods, Bluegrass Motor Sports, MPC Promotions and Portland Youth Baseball League
