Council members Yates, Blackwell, and Fowler sponsor “Stacks of Backpacks” Back to School Donation Drive
Louisville – It won’t be long before students in Metro Louisville will be heading back to class and three Metro Council members are partnering with five local gyms to help in the effort to get students started off on the right foot.
Council members David Yates (D-25), Rick Blackwell (D-12), and Cindi Fowler (D-14) are joining with the gyms to support a friendly competition to collect backpacks and school supplies before the first day of the coming school year.
“We are announcing the first Stacks of Backpacks, Back to School Donation Drive to ensure every Southend child has a backpack and school supplies when they go back to school,” says Yates. “This friendly competition between our area gyms is a testament to the giving spirit of the people and businesses along Dixie.”
The five gyms are:
Crunch Fitness, 6801 Dixie Highway
Louisville Athletic Club, 10205 Dixie Highway
The Southwest YMCA, 2801 Fordhaven Rd
Planet Fitness, 5138 Dixie Highway
Planet Fitness, 10713 Dixie Highway
"This is the way our southwest end of town responds to need in our community. We step up and get it done! Thanks to the participating gyms for their spirit of community care and compassion," says Fowler.
“Making sure our students have the necessary supplies is so important to prepare them for a positive and productive school year,” says Blackwell. “I am grateful to these Southend businesses for their willingness to help our students and schools.”
The Stacks of Backpacks campaign will wrap up on August 9th. All backpacks and school supplies will be collected and then given to the Jefferson County Public School System for distribution in school before classes get underway.
