Simparch

River Monument

The artist team Simparch, made up of Steve Badgett and Matthew Lynch, developed a project concept focused on the Ohio River and the constant element of driftwood found in and around the River. The natural water-worn debris and the unique biomorphic character of each piece of collected driftwood become he artists’ medium for a monument to our mighty River.

“We propose to use this abundant native material as the primary source for a sculpture on the shore. Our interest is to make a work of controlled chaos out of these hydraulic wanderers.”

“Taking the form of a whirlwind or writhing mass, the cluster will be a solid manifestation of the river as an unpredictable and powerful force.”
