June and July 2018
Louisville Parks and Recreation is hosting a soccer street festival for the two World Cup Semi-Final games and the final.
The department has secured a large public viewing HD screen, 17’ x 10’, for the street festival and will be placed on Jefferson Street, in front of Metro Hall while blocking off some of the lanes of traffic between 5th and 6th on Jefferson. The steps of Metro Hall can be used for seating. The television feed will be provided by the local FOX affiliate, WDRB directly to the screen.
The first Semi-Final is scheduled for Tuesday, 10 July 2018 at 2 p.m. The plan is to block the area off by 12:30 p.m. in preparation for the live showing, and open up the area by 4:30 p.m. (not later than 5 p.m.). The same schedule will follow for the second Semi-Final on Wednesday, July 11.
The Final is scheduled for Sunday, 15 July 2018 at 11 a.m. Being a weekend day we will block off the area by 8 a.m. to get ready for a bigger day with the Final. The area will remain blocked off till 3 p.m. There will be food trucks available, a small-sided soccer set up for youth games and knock-abouts, radar gun to gauge dead ball speeds, juggling competition, and vendors that may wish to sell their fare.
The goal of the showings is to create a family friendly (no alcohol), welcoming festival atmosphere where the soccer fan can come celebrate wearing, waving, and sounding off their support for any country they choose to. This is a great way to bring the community together in a safe and fun atmosphere while watching the most viewed single event, the World Cup Final, in a public square. Fan festivals such as this have become a standard around the world and as a diverse city we should not be left behind.
Attendance at these events is free for everyone.
Louisville World Cup Tournament
We are also staging our own World Cup tournament from 14 June through 15 July 2018 with games in the evening starting at 6:30pm, to be played at Thurman Hutchins Park on quality fields.
This is a 7-a-side event for ages 18 and older. Only 32 team spots available.

The entry fee for each team is $150 with a minimum guarantee of three games per team, following the World Cup format for the group games.
Please select a nation your team wishes to represent from the list of the 32 World Cup qualified teams. Thus when Russia plays Saudi Arabia, our tournament teams of the same names will play that evening at Thurman Hutchins Park. We will thus follow the World Cup schedule for the games.
The only difference will appear after the group games where we will not be able to follow the same team designations as in the real World Cup. The games for the Round of 16, Quarterfinals, Semi-Finals, the Third-Place game, and the Final will still fall on the evening of the real World Cup Schedule.
The goal of this event is to continue in the off years. We would also like to make the final on July 15 a great festival with food trucks, family games and fun activities. Kick-Off is at 8 p.m. but the activities will begin at 6 p.m. There will be bleachers set up in a stadium format with flags and colors of the nations represented at the World Cup.
There will be a trophy to be rotated and used for pictures, while medals will be awarded to the winners and runners-up.
The teams must have all the players on the field wear the same color gear with numbers. Shin guards are required. Unlimited substitutions on your ball with thirty-five minute halves, and a ten minute halftime.
Advertising opportunities are available as a sponsor for only $200 for the month from June 14 through July 15, 2018. The sponsor produces the 3’ x 8’ banner with gromets for easy hanging, at their own cost. Please offer a check for $200 payable to Louisville Parks and Recreation by March 31, 2018 to be included in all media items.
