Service Projects

Louisville Parks and Recreation is happy to work with Scouts, students, and neighborhood groups to accommodate a service project when possible, but please be aware:

  • We have found that successful projects are those in which the volunteer has taken the initiative. Scouts and students may call the Volunteer Office for information, but Louisville Parks and Recreation does not spend staff time defining or developing service projects, nor do we guarantee that we will have ready-to-go projects on hand.
  • When developing an idea for a service project it is important to always ask yourself, "How sustainable is this?" When a project is completed, even if it satisfies your initial goals for an achievement award, you may still have to ensure that your project is tended to for years to come. Any work done outside of what is initially planned as part of the Master Plan processes may need to be tended to in the future by yourself or others. This would include such things as plantings and building structures. Louisville Parks and Recreation will not approve any project that cannot be sustained.
  • Due to the complexity of some Eagle projects and the time limitations of students, we have found that we are not always able to accommodate service projects in a timely manner. Projects such as bridge building can take several months due to all the permitting and planning that needs to be achieved before a project can begin. If you have less than 6 months to complete your project, you may want to contact another agency, place of worship, community group, or neighborhood association to accommodate your interest in service in a more timely manner.
  • Due to limited resources and budget of Metro Government, we will not be able to contribute funds or supplies to most service projects. We also may not be able to maintain a project after its completion and are not liable for anything that is to happen to a project after its completion. Any project needing continual maintenance will be removed if it is not properly maintained.

Step one: Submit a Project Request Form. This is a simple outline of your proposed project, and will let us see any big obstacles early on. Please allow at least two weeks for review.

Step Two: Complete and submit a formal Project Proposal based on the input from the Project Information Form. The Project Proposal must include a detailed description of the project, including how it will be supervised and how materials will be provided and/or paid for. This proposal will likely include ‘Before’ photos and sketches of the proposed outcome, lists of materials, blueprints/schematics, and a timeline of how to accomplish the project. Please allow at least 30 days for review.

Note: Any service project that is completed on Louisville Parks and Recreation property without prior Metro Park Staff approval can be removed at any time with no warning.
