Standard Design Guidelines

The Standard Design Guidelines are used to review Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) applications for properties located in local preservation districts (except Clifton) or properties that are designated Individual Landmarks. The Design Guidelines are written by Staff and the Landmarks Commission, with feedback and assistance from community stakeholders, and adopted by the Metro Council. The Design Guidelines are based on the United States Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. The Standard Design Guidelines were recently updated and officially adopted in 2024.

Note: Applications in the Clifton Preservation District are reviewed under a different set of Design Guidelines. These were adopted in 2014.
