Healthy City

"Policy has a tremendous impact on how healthy the people of our city can be. That’s why we adopted a health in all policies approach to all that we do. It’s great to see our efforts having positive results, and we will continue working toward that overall goal of creating a culture of health."

Policy has a tremendous impact on how healthy the people of our city can be. That’s why we adopted a health in all policies approach to all that we do. It’s great to see our efforts having positive results, and we will continue working toward that overall goal of creating a culture of health.

  • We published “Coming Together for Hope, Healing and Recovery,” a 2-year action plan to accelerate the city’s response to the epidemic of opioid abuse and other substance use disorders.
  • Louisville Metro Public Health and Wellness (LMPHW) mobilized to respond to the Hepatitis A outbreak in a way the Centers for Disease Control described as the nation’s “gold standard.” To date, 82,000 immunizations have been given in the city, 20,000 by the Health Department alone.
  • For the first time, Louisville earned a bronze medal from CityHealth, a national organization that rates America’s top 40 cities on health policy.  One of only five cities across the country to improve its medal status, Louisville was cited for adding e-cigarettes and hookah to our smoke-free ordinance, for our restaurant inspection and rating system, and healthy vending policy.
  • LMPHW completed a community-wide health needs assessment and began work on Health Louisville 2025, our action plan to improve community health over the next seven years.
  • Park DuValle Community Health Center (photo) celebrated its 50th anniversary

Our Health Equity Report, updated and shared earlier this year, is a tool for policy makers and residents to better understand the social determinants of health, and how they can create equitable policies and practices for Louisville.
