Outdoor Adventures

The Forest has over 35 miles of hiking trails, ranging from the Siltstone trail (a rugged 6.7 miles, one way) to the Tulip Tree Trail (paved 0.3 miles, one way).

Fishing is permitted at the 5.5 acre Tom Wallace Lake across from the Welcome Center. Tom Wallace Lake is stocked with trout, bluegill, and catfish. A Kentucky fishing license is required, but fishing is otherwise free. Electric trolling motors, rowboats, and canoes are permitted. Please note there is no boat ramp or canoe launch at the lake. Gasoline powered motor boats are not permitted.

Picnicking / Playgrounds

There are three picnic shelters available for rent in the Forest. To reserve a shelter, please call the Welcome Center at (502) 368-5404.

Paul Yost Recreation Area

The Paul Yost Recreation Area has recently been redesigned to reflect some of the recommendations in the 2009 Jefferson Memorial Forest master plan. The area’s trail system has been redesigned to reflect current standards for sustainable trail design and now consists of an 11.3 mile share-use trail for hikers and equestrians. This trail system is now rated easy to moderate and is suitable for those favoring distance over steep grades. Parking is also now available for up to five large horse trailers. Hikers may access the trail system by either parking in the Paul Yost Recreation Area or by parking at the Welcome Center and entering via the Yost Ridge Trail.

Unfortunately neither restrooms nor drinking fountains are available at the Paul Yost Recreation Area. Future plans call for such improved facilities as well as expanded parking and shelter facilities.
