Medical Direction and Oversight

The Office of Medical Direction and Oversight makes sure that EMS provides high-quality, evidence based, pre-hospital care to the citizens and visitors of Louisville and Jefferson County. This primary objective is accomplished through training and education of our providers, post event reviews, protocol development, and regulatory changes.

State of the art technology (FirstWatch and FirstPass) is used to review our electronic patient care records (ePCR) for completeness and protocol compliance. Protocols are developed based on the latest clinical research.

Occasionally, new advance will require improvements to the laws that regulate pre-hospital practice. These improvements are made through regular participation on committees and work groups at the Kentucky Board of EMS (KBEMS).

In-service trainings are scheduled monthly to provide the pre-hospital providers continuing education, as well as training on the latest medical advances.

Additionally, new employees complete a rigorous field orientation program before autonomous practice is approved.
