Larry Carroll
Larry Carroll
Deputy Carroll joined the Coroner's Office in October 2006 after having served for 27 years in law enforcement. Deputy Carroll retired from LMPD in August 2006 as a homicide detective assigned to the LMPD's Cold Case Squad.

Deputy Carroll began his career as a patrol officer in 1978 with the Winchester (KY) Police Department. He later was hired by the Kentucky State Police as a State Trooper in 1979 where he was assigned to the Hazard Post. He remained there until 1987 when he was hired by the Jefferson County Police Department. As a sworn member, Deputy Carroll worked several areas prior to the merger of Louisville/Jefferson County Government such as Patrol, Applicant Background Investigations, Police Academy Instructor, Detective-Evidence Technician Unit, and Detective-Violent Crimes Unit/Homicide.

Deputy Carroll attended the University of Louisville where he obtained his BS degree in Police Adminstration.

Jo-Ann Farmer

Chief Deputy Farmer is a Registered Nurse and former college Professor of Nursing. Her nursing experience includes working in the trauma unit, emergency room, coronary and intensive care units, as well as obstetrics and pediatrics units. She has been a Deputy Coroner since 1998. She currently serves as the Chief Deputy Coroner over Investigations.

Chief Deputy Farmer received her Registered Nurse Degree from the University of Kentucky. She has also undergone training in death investigation including such courses as post mortem examination, court room decorum, Coroner administration, interviewing, and mass fatality planning.  She has received her Advanced Coroner status and Master Coroner status.

Chief Deputy Farmer is also involved on several community groups including the Child Fatality Review Team, the Domestic Violence Review Team, the Elder Abuse Committee, the Louisville Metro Criminal Justice Commission, and the Child Abuse Task Force.
 
Eddie Robinson

Deputy Robinson is a retired Homicide Detective with over 25 years experience in death investigations. He was a Fingerprint Examiner with the FBI and Uniformed Officer with the Secret Service in Washington, DC.

Deputy Robinson's background includes assignments in Violent Crimes, SWAT, Traffic and Dignitary Protection. His past training experiences are Major Case Investigation, First Responder Training, Homicide and Fatal Accident Investigations. He has been with the Coroner's since January 2003.

Deputy Taylor is a former Corrections Officer, and has been with the Coroner's Office since March 2002. As a Corrections Officer, she has had direct responsibility of dealing with incarcerated males and females, developing plans for custody supervision, and a variety of other professional corrections duties.

Cindy Thoene

Deputy Thoene began working in the Coroner’s Office in August of 2010.  She has a total of 28 years of experience as a Registered Nurse.  She received her Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Certification (SANE) in April of 2007 and also holds a Certification in Forensic Nursing (CFN).  She was previously employed by the University of Louisville for 12 years.  Four of those years were spent working in the area of Forensic Nursing in the Departments of Pathology and Pediatrics. During the remainder of her employment with the University of Louisville, she worked in the Department of Surgical Oncology as the Clinical Coordinator of a multi-centered breast cancer clinical trial.  Other clinical nursing experience includes the areas of post-anesthesia (PACU), operating room and newborn intensive care.


Scott Russ
Deputy Scott Russ joined the Coroner’s Office in September 2015. His training began in 1990 as a Kentucky Certified Emergency Medical Technician and his career as an EMT began in 1990 with the City of Louisville EMS.  Deputy Russ was a KY Certified Firefighter, firefighter instructor, and CPR instructor.  Deputy Russ served with the Kansas City, Missouri Police department and then the Louisville Metro Police Department where he served in Patrol, Crimes Against Children Unit, and Homicide.  Deputy Russ retired from the Louisville Metro Police Department in April of 2015.

James Wood
James Wood

Deputy Wood is a life- long resident of Louisville, whose law enforcement career began as a military policeman and service in Vietnam with the 716th Military Police Battalion. He is a former Kentucky State Trooper and joined the Jefferson County Police Department in 1979 and has served in the Patrol Division, Homicide, Robbery, Burglary, Traffic, Narcotics, Internal Affairs, and SWAT.

Deputy Wood  holds an Associate’s Degree in Police Administration from Eastern Kentucky University and a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Police Administration from the University of Louisville. In 1982 according to the Courier Journal, he was able to obtain the “first jury conviction” for Manslaughter in Jefferson County from a motor vehicle collision that caused the death of a young child. In 1993, he was awarded the Medal of Honor from the Jefferson County Police Department. Deputy Wood founded the Peer Support Team to train officers how to deal with stressful job related situations.

Deputy Wood retired in July 2011 as a Major with the Louisville Metro Police Department with 34 years of service. Deputy Wood has been with the Coroner’s Office since January 2015.

 

Jacqueline Smith

Deputy Smith is a retired sergeant from the Louisville Metro Police Department.  Her past duties with the police department include assignments in Patrol, the Planning and Research Unit, the Professional Standards Unit and the Public Integrity Unit.  

Deputy Smith attended the University of Louisville, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree.  She also attended the University of Louisville Southern Police Institute’s Homicide Investigation Course, and has received specialized training in officer involved shooting investigations.  Deputy Smith has been with the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office since January 2016. 

Steve Moran
Steve Moran

Deputy Moran joined the Coroner’s Office in December 2015 after serving 24 years in law enforcement.  He retired from the Louisville Metro Police Department in 2014 as a sergeant in the Canine Unit.   His past duties with the police department include assignments in Patrol, Crimes Against Seniors Unit, Violent Crimes Unit, Swat and Sex Crimes Unit.

Deputy Moran attended the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, where he received a BS degree in Scientific Land Management with a minor in Criminology.

Wayne Pryse
Wayne Pryse
Deputy Pryse joined the Jefferson County Coroner’s office in 2017; he retired as a Sergeant from the Louisville Metro Police Department following 23 years of service.

Deputy Pryse had worked briefly as a corrections officer with the Jefferson County Corrections Department before becoming a police officer and also worked as a campus police officer for the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.   

Deputy Pryse graduated Doss High School here in Louisville, and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Justice Administration from the University of Louisville.

Tony Wight

Deputy Tony Wight joined the Coroner’s Office in July 2017. His training began in 1982 as a Kentucky Certified Emergency Medical Technician and his career as an EMT/Paramedic began in 1983 with the City of Louisville EMS.

He advanced his career in December 1987 by attending Paramedic school that was sponsored by Jefferson County EMS, and has obtained certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support and Basic Trauma Life Support. He was part of the merger of the old City of Louisville EMS with the Louisville Fire Department in October 1995, which was followed by the merger of City and County EMS into LMEMS in 2005. He was formerly a CPR instructor and retired from Louisville Metro Emergency Services in August 2007.

Charles Edelen
Charles Edelen

Deputy Edelen joined the Coroner's Office in July of 2017, after having served 30 years in law enforcement. He retired from Louisville Metro Police Department in 2009 after 22 years as a Major; his experience includes serving in Homicide, Robbery, Patrol, and the Bomb Squad. 

Deputy Edelen then spent eight years serving as Chief of Police of the Indiana University Police Department, Southeast campus in southern Indiana. 

Deputy Edelen attended the FBI National Academy and the Southern Police Institute's Administrative Officers Course.  He attended the University of Louisville and obtained a BS in Justice Administration.

Jeffrey Wheeler

Deputy Coroner Jeff Wheeler joined the Coroner’s Office in November of 2017 after having served Louisville for 21 years in law enforcement; having retired from the Louisville Metro Police Department in August of 2017 at the rank of Sergeant. 
 
Deputy Wheeler began his career as a patrol officer with the Louisville Police Department in 1996 and was assigned to the West End of Louisville until November of 2000.  He became a Homicide Detective until being promoted to Sergeant in 2008.  The other areas he has worked in law enforcement after the creation of the Louisville Metro Police Department include Patrol Sergeant, Traffic Sergeant, and Sergeant of the LMPD Property Room. 

Deputy Wheeler graduated from Eastern Kentucky University in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science in Police Administration and Corrections.  In 1995, Deputy Wheeler received his Master of Science from Eastern Kentucky University in Criminal Justice / Police Administration.
