Pay It Forward: The FREE adoption program that's finding homes for hundreds of shelter animals

Pay It Forward

The Pay It Forward FREE adoption event got underway at Louisville Metro Animal Services on January 3rd after the non-profit organization, Friends of Metro Animal Services (FOMAS), donated $1,000 to cover free adoptions. FOMAS raised the money during its first-ever Pet Photos with Santa event at LMAS' Animal House Adoption Center.

LMAS challenged the community to pay it forward, asking every adopter partaking in the free adoption event to make a donation so that the free adoption chain could continue. The response from the community was overwhelming. On the first day of the Pay It Forward free adoption event, a line of dozens of people stretched across the parking lot of Animal House. 36 shelter animals were adopted that day!

Since the inception of the free adoption event, more than 680 LMAS shelter animals have been adopted and thousands of dollars have been donated to continue the free adoption chain. At this time last year, 493 LMAS shelter animals had been adopted. The free adoptions will continue until the money runs out. The free adoption event only applies to large dogs (at least 40 lbs.) and cats. The goal is to find loving forever homes for these animals who so deperately want to find their way out of the shelter.

While LMAS is waiving adoption fees, it is not waiving the adoption process. You must fill out an application and be approved before taking home a furry companion! If you would like to adopt, check out our adoptables here or at our Animal House Adoption Center (3516 Newburg Rd.) If you're are still looking after that, come to Metro Animals Services (3705 Manslick Rd.) and PAY IT FORWARD! All animals will be spayed/neutered, microchipped and vaccinated prior to adoption.
