The Mayor's Healthy Hometown Movement, Kentucky Proud, and Pennyrile Allied Community Services are sponsoring a series of events this summer at Louisville's neighborhood Farmers' Markets. 24 local chefs will compete across the city to create "Winning Market Meals," dishes created from fresh, local ingredients that can be easily recreated by cooks at home in approximately 30 minutes. They will be judged on originality, nutrition and overall taste, and how easily the recipe can be replicated by the average home cook. The competition is part of an effort to promote healthy, home cooked meals and increased consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables grown locally.

Cabin at the George Rogers Clark Home Site open to visitors The George Rogers Clark Homesite is a 9 acre park overlooking the Ohio River. A cabin, similar to the one General George Rogers Clark lived in from 1802 to 1809, was constructed there in 2001 and furnished with an extensive collection of period items. Interpreters will be available to share the history of General Clark and the beginning of the town of Clarksville. In addition to the cabin, the park has a picnic area and a boat ramp.

Steeped in tradition and continuity, both of these art forms have served as an important bridge to the region's cultural history and a conduit for economic development. Works by 60 artists and craftspeople from throughout the Southern Arts Federation's nine partner states Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee) will be accompanied by a rich array of artist interviews, stories and background information on the master artists and their process. In celebration of this important exhibit, Kentucky potter Fong Choo will host an Artist Lecture on Thursday, July 17 at 6:00 p.m., exploring the various techniques and inspiration behind some of his most renowned pieces.

Background: SANE was selected as a beneficiary for this screening of "the Gits", about a band whose lead singer was originally from Louisville. She was sadly raped and murdered several years ago. After her death a charity called "home alive" was started in Seattle where she lived when she was killed.

After you work up an apetite, participatns are taken to lunch at local eateries. Although this program is free, you will need to bring money to purchase your lunch.

As the sister of Mary Todd Lincoln and the wife of Confederate General Benjamin Hardin Helm, Emilie Todd Helm had a front row view of history during and after the Civil War. She and her husband knew the Lincolns very well. Benjamin Helm turned down a personal offer from Lincoln to become paymaster of the Union Army with the rank of major, choosing instead to join the Confederacy and become the president's "rebel brother-in-law." After Helm was killed at Chickamauga, President and Mrs. Lincoln invited Emilie to come to the White House. As a southern loyalist and widow of the commander of the famous Orphan Brigade, her presence in the While House aroused protests. Lincoln defended his right to have anyone he chose as his guest, but Helm soon departed for Kentucky, where she lived out her long life. She weathered the ordeals of the war and reconstruction and landed in Elizabethtown, where three consecutive presidents appointed her postmistress. Helm attended many Confederate reunions, where she was hailed as the Mother of the Orphan Brigade.

John Graham - Teaching English in China Free and open to the public On July 14, John Graham will speak about his experience teaching English in China earlier this summer. John Graham is a retired geography/history teacher from Shelby County, and he currently works part-time at Louisville Technical Institute. He went to China as part of the 2008 US-China Friendship tour. He spent one month teaching English at four schools in Guangxi. Then, for three weeks, he traveled in northern Yunnan and the Sichuan Province. He was close to the epicenter of the devastating May 12 earthquake. During his presentation, he will show slides of the earthquake aftermath; Wolong Panda Center; Qiang; Tibetan and Naxi villages; Tiger Leaping Gorge; bicycle tours of Yangshou and the Li Pu area; classroom experiences and schools where he taught.

Shakespeare in the Park–12th Night During the summer months, we bring “Free Will” to the community, with free Shakespeare performances at the C. Douglas Ramey Amphitheatre in historic Old Louisville’s Central Park. A family tradition to many, Shakespeare in Central Park has been free since the first performance in 1960. Running concurrently with our summer season is Shakespeare Youth Academy. “SYA” offers education, production and performance opportunities for youth ages 5-18, including a high school theatre troupe that hosts a full week of performances in Central Park as the mainstage production.

Several years ago, Earthsave Louisville had a dining out group that enjoyed visiting several local restaurantsthat were ‘vegetarian-friendly.’ These were fun events that were pretty well attended by those who don’t (gasp!) especially enjoy cooking, but also by those who just like to eat out!That said, we are planning a get-together the third Thursday of every month featuring a different restaurant.This is an opportunity to socialize with other vegetarians and try some new restaurants.For our first venue The Grape Leaf restaurant has been selected.

The exhibition is meant to bring awareness and a greater understanding of refugee experiences and how people can get involved in helping refugees in their own communities.
