What You Need to Know When Placing an Emergency Call

9-1-1 What you need to know
9-1-1 should be called immediately for any emergency which threatens a person’s life or property.

When you diall 9-1-1, the person answering the phone will say, 9-1-1-this is operator (last name), where is your emergency?

WHERE IS YOUR EMERGENCY?

Tell them the exact location of the emergency including:
Address:  house number, street name, street suffix, apartment number, and if it is inside or outside.

WHAT IS YOUR EMERGENCY?

Tell them exactly what is happening right now.

WHAT DO YOU NEED?

Police/Fire/EMS

Questions possibly asked when requesting a Police response:

Is anyone in immediate danger?
How many people are involved?
Is anyone under the influence of drugs or alcohol?
Does anyone have any weapons?
Can you describe persons or vehicles?
What direction was the car or person traveling?

Questions possibly asked when requesting a Fire response:

Are you in immediate danger?
Is everyone out of the building/ location?
What is burning?
What part of the building/ location?

Questions possibly asked when requesting an EMS response:

Is the person:
Breathing?
Conscious?
Bleeding?
Injured?
Complaining of pain?

Always remember to:

  • REMAIN CALM
  • SPEAK CLEARLY
  • LISTEN TO ALL INSTRUCTIONS
  • ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS COMPLETELY
