Brightside strives to find ways for all Louisville residents to become engaged in keeping our community clean, green and beautiful. NatureScape Grants are designed to help neighborhood groups and other non-profits keep the public spaces of the community looking its best by connecting your group with the needed resources to create the beautification project of your choosing.

NatureScape Grant Applications are now available at. Submission deadline is 4:00pm, March 31, 2010. Click here for more details on qualifications. Click here for an application.

Tips: Brightside is particularly interested in landscape projects that green-up our community. This might include planting trees in your neighborhood or creating a welcoming landscape for your subdivision entrance or a community garden. NatureScape grants can also be used to fund cleanup projects for your area. Click here for additional details.Who can apply? Any officially recognized 501(c) non-profit or suburban city may apply for up to $1,500 in project money. Your group may apply two funding cycles in a row for a total of $3,000, then we ask that your group wait one year before applying again so that we may involve many different organizations. What types of projects will be considered? Brightside is particularly interested in landscape projects that green-up our community. This might include planting trees in your neighborhood or creating a welcoming landscape for your subdivision entrance or a community garden. We do ask that NatureScape grant money not be used for neighborhood entrance signage and since groups can only receive NatureScape funding two times in a row, we prefer not to fund labor for on-going maintenance such as grass cutting. NatureScape grants can also be used to fund cleanup projects for your area. This might include purchasing supplies or providing incentives for participants. Brightside is excited to announce that YUM! Brands is generously sponsoring a special category for community vegetable gardens. If your project involves creating a garden where produce will be grown and shared among members of a community, your 501(c) non-profit or suburban city is encouraged to apply.

Irish Society of Kentuckiana Ceili

Saturday, November 07, 2009 6:30pm-11pm
Enjoy a buffet dinner and entertainment... League of Women Voters to Train Candidates

The League of Women Voters of Louisville today announced it will reprise its highly successful "Training to Run" workshop to encourage non-traditional candidates take the plunge into electoral politics. First offered in 2001 to assist a huge field of candidates for the post merger Louisville Metro Council, this year's workshop is designed for state and local candidates, campaign managers and treasurers throughout Kentucky.

The "Training to Run" workshop will be held on Saturday, November 14, at the League headquarters, 115 South Ewing Ave. The workshop will feature representatives from the Jefferson County Board of Elections, Kentucky Registry of Election Finance, and the Legislative Ethics Commission, media and direct-mail professionals providing information on the requirements for running (e.g., financial reporting of expenditures and contributions), as well as information on voter registration records, printing cost for items such as yard sign and how to organize volunteers for canvassing.

"We developed this workshop in 2001 after the merger referendum and we started getting requests for information from potential candidates," League President Vicki Willard said. "We feel the same thing is stirring today, that new leaders are emerging for the state legislature and city councils throughout Kentucky, and we want to encourage these true grassroots campaigns, won or lost on the basis of energy and vision, rather than money and connections."

"Potential candidates and campaign managers will leave with the basics they need to start organizing a campaign. They won't make the kind of avoidable mistakes that disqualify candidates, and they'll meet the people who regulate the electoral process and will know who to call for more information," said Willard.

The cost of the November 14 workshop, which will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the League headquarters at 115 S. Ewing Ave in Louisville is $100 per person and includes lunch and all materials.

Call To Action-Dinner & Card Party

Saturday, November 14, 2009 7pm-12am
Professor Jim Madison's book Slinging Doughnuts for the Boys, is a window into the men who defeated the Nazis and the Red Cross women who helped make victory possible. Volunteer Liz Richardson doled out doughnuts and coffee to American soldiers, and as her diaries reveal, she gained insight into the homesick GIs.

The Gallopalooza Live Auction Committee, chaired by Fran Thornton, has selected the 40 decorated fiberglass horses to be in the Gallopalooza Live Auction Gala (additionally, nearly 60 other horses will be in an online auction at www.gallopalooza.com)

Gallopalooza, Inc., the civic pride project that is currently displaying more than 130 life-size horses designed by professional and amateur artists throughout the Louisville area, plans to auction approximately 100 of the horse statues to the highest bidders in Live and Online Auctions next month to raise money for community beautification projects done in partnership with Brightside. The 32 remaining horses were bought by their initial sponsors, who had the first right of refusal to purchase the artful equines outright.

Since April, the horses have been on public display on sidewalks and street corners throughout Louisville and surrounding counties. Once individuals or companies purchase the horses at auction, the statues may be moved to the display location of their choice.

“We have had great interest in this year’s herd, especially the foals,” noted Lynn Huffman, executive director of Gallopalooza. “There is also huge interest in Black Jack, created by Flags4Vets, and America’s Victory Ryder, which was signed by all thirty professional golfers in town for the 2008 Ryder Cup.”

The last time Gallopalooza had horses up for auction was in 2004. Average price for the colorful colts at that time was $3,500, with the top one (War Admiral by Marí Renn) selling for more than $16,000.

Tickets to the Live Auction Gala, which is sponsored by Kindred Healthcare and Virginia Lyons Speed, cost $50 for general admission seating and $100 for VIP seating, which includes a special reception that begins at 6:00 p.m. For more information about the auction, visit www.gallopalooza.com or call Huffman at 502.394.0978.

Gallopalooza was created in 2003 as a sister organization to Brightside which was launched in 1986 by Mayor Jerry Abramson. Brightside also promotes civic pride by partnering with citizens to keep Louisville clean, green and environmentally aware.
