Mayor Announces Expanded Residential Recycling Program

Standing in the Cloverleaf neighborhood today, Mayor Greg Fischer announced a new pilot program with the goal of increasing recycling in Louisville.
Two routes – about 7,500 residences – within the Urban Services District, one where the current recycling volume is moderate and one where the current recycling volume is considered low, were selected to kick off the program.
Residents on those routes will receive 95-gallon recycling carts, which hold five-times the capacity of the current 18-gallon orange bins. The two routes will be part of a six-month study to understand how citizens recycle and to discover if providing a larger recycling container will increase the number of households that recycle.
“We are changing our recycling habits within Metro Government to make Louisville a more sustainable city and to reduce what we send to the landfill,” Fischer said. “We hope this program will show that a simple change, like providing a larger container, will make a big impact.”
While only the two recycling routes will be a part of the pilot program, all residents of the Urban Services District now have the option of purchasing the 95-gallon recycling cart for $50. Beginning Monday, October 29, carts will be available for purchase by calling MetroCall 311 or by printing out the form at www.louisvilleky.gov/solidwaste/recycling and mailing it in with a check or money order. If a residential unit has more than one 95-gallon garbage cart, they can exchange it for a new recycling cart at no charge.
The expanded recycling program is one of five Innovation Delivery Team projects announced in May as part of the $5 million Bloomberg Philanthropies Grant Louisville received last year.
