City and Walmart Partner for More Sustainable City

Wednesday October 9, 2013

Walmart is teaming with Louisville’s Office of Sustainability to improve energy efficiency citywide by offering energy assessments to its many suppliers based in Louisville.

“To make sustainability truly part of Louisville’s culture, it is critical that more individuals and companies think and act through a lens of sustainability,” Mayor Greg Fischer said. “Walmart is not only thinking greener, it is getting suppliers to think and act greener and these actions will hopefully have ripple effects throughout our community.”

Walmart’s 40 suppliers in Louisville will be invited to participate in this voluntary program. Walmart’s energy experts will advise on energy efficiency improvements aimed at reducing energy consumption in areas such as lighting, HVAC, and building controls. The suppliers will receive advice identifying energy reduction opportunities, the estimated savings and the return on investment of energy efficiency upgrades.

This initiative will provide opportunities to improve the energy efficiency of businesses in the city and help Walmart suppliers based in Louisville profitably grow their businesses, in line with the city’s recently released Sustain Louisville plan. The program will provide smaller companies with access to specialized engineering expertise they otherwise would not have the resources to engage. Walmart energy management personnel will visit all participants, providing recommendations based on their individual needs.

“We believe this is a first of its kind program which combines the technical expertise of a private sector supply chain with a public policy initiative,” said Jim Stanway, Senior Director, Global Energy Services. “Not only does this program align with Walmart’s sustainability goals, it is beneficial to Louisville and Louisville based suppliers.”
