Sixth Vehicle Impounded For Illegal Dumping

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (June 19, 2013) – Wednesday afternoon Metro Solid Waste management enforcement officers caught Edwin Wakefield, Jr. dumping a load of asphalt from his pick-up truck in the rear alley of 2813 W. Chestnut Street.
SWMS enforcement officers notified LMPD to impound Wakefield’s white, 2006 Ford F-150. He was cited with a $500 fine for illegal dumping and must also pay towing and storage fees for his impounded vehicle. He has three days to remove the debris he dumped or face an additional $500 clean-up fee.
The Illegal Dumping ordinance reads that Metro Louisville will hold the vehicle used in illegal dumping for six months, up to 12 months. It will not be released until there is proof that all fines for illegal dumping, cleanup costs and tow lot fees have been paid. Fines can range from $250 to $5000 and clean up fees are a minimum of $250. The towing fee charged by LMPD is $112. There is also a $13 administrative cost. The Impound Lot charges $13 a day for storage, making the initial first day cost $138.
This is the sixth vehicle impounded since the Metro Council amended the illegal dumping ordinance last year.
“If people are going to continue to dump illegally, then we will continue to impound their vehicles and make them pay the price,” Public Works Director Vanessa Burns said. “We are committed to putting an ended to this kind of activity. It will not be tolerated.”
“I commend the quick work of the Solid Waste enforcement officers and Louisville Metro Police in helping us catch illegal dumpers. Stopping illegal dumping is a priority for the Metro Council and Metro Public Works,” Councilwoman Cheri Bryant Hamilton (D-5) said. “District 5 is not a dumping ground and neither is any other neighborhood in Metro Louisville. Do it and you will get caught.”
