Bluegrass Renaissance: The "Athens of the West": Image in the Nation and in Memory

In the era between Kentucky statehood and the death of Henry Clay, Lexington and its environs represented something special in the minds of Americans and foreigners alike. Travelers from abroad regularly made this jewel of western America a stop in their trips; United States citizens wrote of this “Athens of the West,” this place of culture and refinement that had grown out of frontier roots. Yet that bright promise faltered. Why? Dr. Klotter, the State Historian of Kentucky and Professor of History at Georgetown College, address what made the area so strong in that heyday time, what problems arose, and what strengths carried forward from that era. The Locust Grove Afternoon Lecture Series is held the first Wednesday of each month. Dessert and coffee are served at 1:00 pm with the lecture immediately following at 1:15 PM. Admission is $5, $3 for Friends of Historic Locust Grove. Reservations are not required.
