Mayor Responds to President Obama's Violence Prevention Plan

Wednesday January 16, 2013

Mayor Greg Fischer was seated in the audience today at the White House when President Obama unveiled his violence reduction plan. He released the following statement.

“I’m in Washington D.C. for the regular meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors and was honored to be invited to the White House to listen to the President’s proposal today. I was joined by 12 other mayors from across America.

“I’m a strong supporter of the 2nd amendment. We need to have an honest debate in this country about assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips; we also need to address the serious issue of mental health and illness.

“I hope leaders at all levels of government in this country are actively engaged in this dialogue. This is critical to our violence prevention work in Louisville as well as a common-sense element of our compassionate city.”

In Washington this week, Fischer participated in a forum on innovation and government efficiency at the Bookings Institution. At the U.S. Conference of Mayor's Winter Meeting, he led a workshop on economic issues facing America's cities.
