a Job Fair, Student Loan Workshop and More



Neighborhood Place locations in Louisville will offer free events and workshops for the entire family in May including a job fair, a workshop for those in default of student loans, two workshops for second chance bank accounts, two support groups for grandparents raising grandchildren plus much more. May 5, 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Project at Cane Run Neighborhood Place, 1 - 4 p.m.

Located at 3410 Lees Ln. Call 485-6826 for more information. The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten is a new Library program that encourages all families and caregivers to read at least 1000 books with their young children before they enter Kindergarten. Hosted by the Shively Library and Cane Run Neighborhood Place, free books will be given out to kids who sign up for this program.

May 6 and May 20, Here’s to My Health -- A healthy cooking class at Ujima Neighborhood Place, 6 - 7 p.m.
Located at 3610 Bohne Ave. Call 485-6145 for more information. This healthy initiative cooking class is offered by the Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service. All are invited to participate in this one-hour course to learn healthy ways to prepare different recipes as well as an opportunity for tasting.

Each Tuesday, Meditation Workshops at Ujima Neighborhood Place, 12:30 - 1:45 p.m.

Join Emma from Naam Yoga Therapies for a joyful meditative experience using sound and breathing to uplift and elevate the body at its deepest cellular level. Be prepared to be inspired educated, rejuvenated and lifted into the universal vibrations of love, peace and light.

May 8, CHAMPS Data Daze at NorthWest Neighborhood Place, 4 - 7 p.m.
Located at 4018 West Market St. Contact 694-2267 for more information or inquiries. All participants who completed the CHAMPS program at NorthWest Neighborhood Place in February of this year are invited to this follow up survey session.

Bank On Louisville’s Start Fresh! is a free workshop for people with negative (non-fraud) banking histories, are in ChexSystems, or are banking for the first time. Participants will gain new information and tools to use second-chance or new checking accounts.

May 14, Journey Within Baby Shower at South Jefferson Neighborhood, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Located at 1000 Neighborhood Place in Fairdale, off National Turnpike. Space is limited, so call 439-9462 soon to reserve your spot. Take a day to retreat from the world as we take a “Journey Within” of self-discovery. This “Journey” is a special one, unique to those who are pregnant (or recently delivered within 60 days), or have someone in their lives such as parent(s), partners or friends; who may have experienced or been affected by alcohol or drug use – and how that can impact our lives, our children’s lives, stressors, relationships, pregnancies, socializing, personalities, choices, etc. Attendees of the retreat will receive a $50 gift certificate and win baby items for their participation. Sponsored by Seven Counties Services and South Jefferson Neighborhood Place.

May 15, Kitchen Table Conversations at NorthWest Neighborhood Place, 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Located at 4018 W. Market St. Call 458-6429 for additional information. Join an engaging conversation at this monthly Grandparents as Parents support group facilitated by Helen Deines, Professor Emeritus of Spalding University, and receive essential community information and resources. Light refreshments will be served.

May 16 and 17, Yard Sale and Bake Sale at Bethany United Church of Christ, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Located at 10400 Old Preston Hwy. Contact 363-1483 for more details or to donate items. This yard sale and bake sale will feature bargains and hard-to-find treasures as well as homemade goodies prepared by experienced bakers. The event will be open rain or shine. All proceeds will go to support the Baby-Go-Round and the Annual Back to School Festival of South Jefferson Neighborhood Place. Both projects support families in the southwest community of Louisville Metro. Sponsored by the South Jefferson Neighborhood Place Community Council.

May 22, South Central Neighborhood Place Job Fair at Americana Community Center, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Located at 4801 Southside Drive. Call 485-7130 for more information. All are invited to attend a Job Fair hosted by South Central Neighborhood Place. Bring copies of your resume and talk with representatives from Kroger, Time Warner Cable, UPS, Republic Bank and several others.

May 22, Healthy Journey for Two at First Neighborhood Place, 2 - 4 p.m.
Located at 1503 Rangeland Rd. Please RSVP by calling 962-3175. Seven Counties and KIDSNow will be hosting an educational baby shower to share information on how to care for yourself and your baby while being pregnant. Participants will receive a colorful diaper tote bag filled with baby items such as a blanket, bottle, wash cloth, etc. and a gas/gift card. Fathers welcome but must be registered

May 22, Defaulted Student Loans Workshop at South Jefferson Neighborhood Place, 12 – 1:30 p.m.
Located at 1000 Neighborhood Place in Fairdale, off National Turnpike. Contact 363-1449 or 485-7311 to register. Learn how to get your student loans under control and your credit back on track. This workshop will provide good information about balancing your budget while managing the debt of student loans.

May 27, Southwest Providers CONNECT meeting at Southwest Branch Library, 3 – 4:30 p.m.
Located at 10375 Dixie Hwy. Contact 363-1483 for more details. Southwest area non-profit providers gather bi-monthly to discuss area needs, events and concerns. Collaboration and information are the keys to join and be a part of the community providers that seek to encourage and empower each other in their work within the area. May 27, Norton Healthcare Mobile Unit at Cane Run Neighborhood Place, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Located at 3410 Lees Ln. Call 899-6842 for more information or to make an appointment. The Mobile Unit will offer low/no-cost mammograms and pap smears for women over 40 years old. Those with insurance are asked to bring their card and those who are uninsured, who reside in Jefferson County, may qualify for a no-cost screening.

May 27, Drug Free Community Elementary Schools Poster Contest Awards Ceremony at the Fairdale Playtorium, 6 – 7:30 p.m.

The Fifth Annual Drug Free Community Poster Contest Awards Ceremony will highlight the art work of 30 elementary school students that have been selected out of 500 entries submitted. This event showcases students from the southwest elementary schools who have exhibited through their art a strong desire to get the message out that young people will suffer dangerous consequences by using drugs. Sponsored by the South Jefferson Neighborhood Place Community Council, the Louisville Youth Alliance and the Kidz Club

May 28, Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Support Group at Cane Run Neighborhood Place, 1 – 2 p.m.
Located at 3410 Lees Ln. Call 485-6826 for more information. This group meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month to offer support and resources for grandparents raising their grandchildren and other caretakers such as aunts and uncles.
